How to create an SMS QR code
An SMS QR code opens a pre-written text message to your number. It is the fastest way to get someone onto a keyword campaign or into a conversation — no dialling, no typing the number, no remembering the keyword.
- Enter the number texts should be sent to, in international format.
- Add the message (optional) — a keyword or starter line the sender can send as-is.
- Brand it in the design section if you like.
- Download as PNG, SVG or JPEG and add it to your poster or flyer.
Where SMS QR codes work well
Marketing opt-ins ('scan and text JOIN'), radio and event competitions, charity donations by text, and quick-contact on posters where a call feels too formal. Because the number and keyword are pre-filled, entry rates are far higher than asking people to type it all themselves.
SMS QR code FAQ
What does an SMS QR code do?
When scanned, it opens the phone's messaging app with the recipient number and your message text already filled in. The person just presses send — handy for opt-ins, keywords and quick replies.
Can I set the message text in advance?
Yes. The message is optional but pre-filling it is the point — for example a keyword like 'JOIN' for a mailing list, or 'BOOK' to start an enquiry.
Which phones support it?
It uses the standard SMSTO format supported by iPhone and Android. The phone opens its default messaging app ready to send.
Is the number hidden?
No — the destination number is encoded in the code and may be shown by a scanner before sending, the same as printing it publicly.
Does it expire or cost anything?
No. It is a free static code with no account. Standard message rates from the sender's carrier apply to the text itself, as with any SMS.
